When the Chrysler PT Cruiser first hit the market in July 2000, it inspired a whole generation of hippies and surfers who could remember the grand old days of motoring in the 1950s. The PT Cruiser seemed at first, a bit of a novelty, however today it appears as popular as ever. More importantly, there are a lot of excellent oneowners that can be purchased.

With its blend of modern finish and 1950s styling, the Chrysler PT Cruiser certainly offered something different to the normal run of the mill cars being sold when it first hit the roads in Australia in 2000. While it had great looks, unfortunately the PT Cruiser\'s 2.0 litre engine failed to live up to expectations for such a great looking car. It was often criticised for being a little too sluggish and as far as handling went, left a little to be desired. But the PT Cruiser still found a loyal following. And before long they could be spotted all over the place, particularly along the coastal fringe.

There is little doubt that the PT Cruiser has appeal, especially among aging surfers. But it isn\'t just for the car\'s cool retro looks. The PT Cruiser is actually a hatchback, and it\'s the room in the rear that really has appeal. The rear seats will fit three adults at a squeeze (if they\'re on the slim side), but will fit two adults across the back comfortably with adequate leg and headroom. And with the back seat folded down there\'s plenty of room to throw your surfboard in the back without any problems.

If you\'re going for a good used PT Cruiser, try and go for one produced after 2004. In 2004, a 2.4 litre 16 valve engine producing 105 kw replaced the earlier sluggish 2.0 litre engines. The newer 2.4 litre engine, while better than the 2.0 litre it replaced, is still no high performance engine though.

When inspecting a car, check the interior carefully. Due to the PT Cruiser\'s head turning looks (at least in its earlier days) and its efficient use of space in the back, many cars were used as commercial vehicles. So look for signs of extra wear and tear. Also, look for signs of damage and repair work. Check for smooth gear changes in the manual.

If you want a oneowner car that handles like a dream and will beat the traffic off at the lights every time, then the PT Cruiser is probably not what you\'re after. However, if you want something with plenty of room for the boards in the back and for leisurely drives down to the beach to catch a few waves of a morning, then definitely take a closer look at the Chrysler PT Cruiser.
